Buddha spoke the Amitabha Sutra (Sukhāvatī-vyūha)

如是我聞。
Thus have I heard 。
一時佛在 舍衛國 祇樹 給孤獨 園。與大 比丘 僧千二百五十人俱。
Once Buddha was in the country of Śrāvastī , at the Jeta Grove of Anāthapiṇḍika (Provider to the Orphans and Solitary) 。with an assembly of one thousand two hundred fifty great Bhikshus (monks) 。
皆是大 阿羅漢 。眾所知識。長老 舍利弗 。
all were Great Arhats and well known to all in the assembly: 。like Elder Sāriputra 。
摩訶 目乾連 。 摩訶迦葉 。 摩訶迦栴延 。
Great Maudgalyayana 。Great Kasyapa 。Great Katyayana 。
摩訶拘絺羅。 離婆多 。 周梨槃陀迦 。 難陀 。 阿難陀 。
Great Kauṣṭhila 。 Revata 。 Suddhipanthaka 。 Nanda 。 Ānanda 。
羅睺羅。 憍梵波提 。賓頭盧頗羅墮。迦留陀夷。
Rāhula 。 Gavampati 。Piṇḍola-bhāradvāja 。Kalodayin 。
摩訶 劫賓那 。 薄俱羅 。阿[少/兔]樓馱。
Great Kaṃphina 。 Vakula 。 Aniruddha 。
如是等諸 大弟子 。并諸 菩薩 摩訶薩。 文殊師利 法王子 。
and other such great disciples 。Also there were Great Bodhisattvas 。 Manjushri Prince of the Dharma 。
阿逸多 菩薩 。乾陀訶提菩薩。常精進菩薩。
Ajita Bodhisattva 。Gandhahastin Bodhisattva 。Nityodyukta (Constant Progress) Bodhisattva 。
與如是等諸大 菩薩 。及 釋提桓因 等。
and other such Great Bodhisattvas 。Also there was Indra 。
無量諸天大眾俱。
with countless Heavenly Beings in the assembly 。
爾時佛告長老 舍利弗 。
At that time Buddha said to Elder Sāriputra 。
從是 西方 過十萬億 佛土 。有世界名曰 極樂 。
From here and following the West direction, past ten billion Buddha lands 。there exists a world named Ultimate Bliss 。
其土有佛號 阿彌陀 。今現在說法。 舍利弗 。
In that land there exists a Buddha named Amitābha 。who is at this time expounding the Dharma 。 Sāriputra 。
彼土何故名為 極樂 。其國眾生無有眾苦。
Why is that land named Ultimate Bliss ? 。In that land sentient beings do not have myriad sufferings 。
但受諸樂故名 極樂 。又 舍利弗 。 極樂國土 。
and only receive myriad joys. That is why it is named Ultimate Bliss 。Moreover, Sāriputra 。That land of Ultimate Bliss 。
七重欄楯七重羅網七重行樹。皆是四寶周匝圍繞。
is surrounded by seven rings of railings, seven rows of nets and seven rows of trees 。All are made of four precious jewels 。
是故彼國名曰 極樂 。又 舍利弗 。 極樂國土 有 七寶池 。
That is why that land is called Ultimate Bliss 。Also Sāriputra 。The land of Ultimate Bliss has ponds made of seven jewels 。
八 功德水 充滿其中。池底純以金沙布地。
and full of water of eight merits and virtues 。The pond bottom is filled with pure gold sand 。
四邊階道。金銀琉璃頗梨合成。上有樓閣。
On four sides of the ponds are the steps and walkways 。made of gold, silver, lapis lazuli and crystal 。Above them are towers 。
亦以金銀琉璃頗梨車磲赤珠馬瑙而
with adornments made also of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, mother pearl, red agate and carnelian.
嚴飾之。池中 蓮花 大如車輪。青色青光。
In the ponds are lotus flowers as big as carriage wheels 。blue ones with blue light 。
黃色黃光。赤色赤光。白色白光微妙香潔。
yellow ones with yellow light 。red ones with red light 。white ones with white light. All are wonderful, fragrant and pure 。
舍利弗。 極樂國土 成就如是 功德莊嚴 。
Sāriputra 。The land of Ultimate Bliss is complete with all these merits and adornments 。
又 舍利弗 。彼 佛國土 常作 天樂 。黃金為地。
Also Sāriputra 。in that Buddha land , there is constantly celestial music 。and the ground is made of pure gold 。
晝夜六時天雨 曼陀羅華 。
Day and night six times Mandara flowers rain down from heaven 。
其國眾生常以清旦各以衣裓盛眾妙華。
In that land sentient beings in early morning use cloth bags to hold myriad wonderful flowers 。
供養他方十萬億佛。即以食時還到本國。飯食經行。
and make offering to ten billion Buddhas in other directions 。At meal time they return to their own land 。After eating they circumambulate 。
舍利弗。 極樂國土 成就如是 功德莊嚴 。
Sāriputra 。The land of Ultimate Bliss is complete with all these merits and adornments 。
復次 舍利弗 。彼國常有種種奇妙雜色之鳥。
Moreover, Sāriputra 。In that land there are all kinds of colorful and beautiful birds 。
白鵠 孔雀 鸚鵡 舍利 迦陵頻伽 共命之鳥。
like white cranes, peacocks , orioles, myna birds and cuckoos 。
是諸眾鳥。晝夜六時出和雅音。
All these birds 。day and night six times make harmonious and elegant sounds 。
其音演暢 五根 五力 七 菩提分 八聖 道分如是等法。
Those bird songs expound Dharma teachings such as five roots , five powers , seven awakening factors, the factors of the noble eightfold path etc… 。
其土眾生聞是音已。皆悉 念佛 念法 念僧 。
In that land when sentient beings listen to the bird songs 。they all pray to the Buddhas , pray to the Dharma and pray to the Sangha 。
舍利弗。汝勿謂此鳥實是罪報所生。
Sāriputra 。Do not say that those birds are born by karmic retribution for past misdeeds 。
所以者何。彼 佛國土 無三 惡趣 。 舍利弗 。
Why so? 。Because that Buddha land has no three evil destinies 。 Sāriputra 。
其 佛國土 尚無 三惡道 之名。何況有實。是諸眾鳥。
In that Buddha land even the names of evil paths do not exist 。much less their real existence . All those birds
皆是 阿彌陀佛 。欲令 法音 宣流變化所作。
are created by Amitābha Buddha 。 who wants to broadcast the Dharma sounds 。
舍利弗。彼 佛國土 。
Sāriputra 。In that Buddha land 。
微風吹動諸寶行樹及寶羅網出微妙音。譬如百千種樂同時俱作。
light winds touch the rows of jeweled trees and the jeweled nets, and produce wondrous sounds 。like hundreds and thousands of melodies simultaneously playing together 。
聞是音者皆自然生 念佛 念法 念僧 之心。
Listening to those sounds gives rise to the prayers to the Buddhas, the prayers to the Dharma and the prayers to the Sangha 。
舍利弗。其 佛國土 成就如是 功德莊嚴 。
Sāriputra 。That Buddha land is complete with these merits and adornments 。
舍利弗。於汝意云何。彼佛何故號 阿彌陀 。
Sāriputra 。 What do you think ? 。Why is that Buddha named Amitābha ? 。
舍利弗。彼 佛光 明無量。
Sāriputra 。That Buddha has infinite bright light 。
照 十方 國無所障礙。是故號為 阿彌陀 。又 舍利弗 。彼 佛壽 命。
that shines all worlds in ten directions without any obstruction 。For this reason that Buddha is named Amitābha 。Also Sāriputra 。That Buddha 。
及其人民 無量無邊阿僧祇劫 。
and his people live for infinite boundless incalculable eons 。
故名 阿彌陀 。 舍利弗 。 阿彌陀佛 成佛已來於今 十劫 。
That is why that Buddha is named Amitābha 。 Sāriputra 。 Amitābha Buddha became a Buddha ten eons ago 。
又 舍利弗 。彼佛有無量無邊 聲聞 弟子。
Also Sāriputra 。That Buddha has infinite boundless Voice-hearer disciples 。
皆 阿羅漢 。非是算數之所能知。諸 菩薩 亦復如是。
that are all Arhats 。incalculable and innumerable 。 The Bodhisattvas are also very numerous 。
舍利弗。彼 佛國土 成就如是 功德莊嚴 。
Sāriputra 。That Buddha land is complete with these merits and adornments 。
極樂 國土 眾生生者皆是 阿鞞跋致 。其中多有 一生補處 。其數甚多。
In that land of Ultimate Bliss, sentient beings born there are all Non-Retrogression 。Among them, there are many Once-More-Rebirth 。These are very numerous 。
非是算數所能知之。
incalculable and innumerable 。
但可以 無量無邊阿僧祇劫 說。 舍利弗 。眾生聞者。
It is only possible to use infinite boundless incalculable eons to speak 。 Sāriputra 。sentient beings who listen to this Sutra 。
應當發願願生彼國。所以者何。
should vow to be reborn in that land 。Why so? 。
得與如是諸上善人俱會一處。 舍利弗 。
Because they will be together with Beings with Superior Goodness in one place 。 Sāriputra 。
不可以少善根福德 因緣 得生彼國。 舍利弗 。若有 善男子 善女人。
It is impossible to use a few good roots, blessings, virtues, causes and conditions to be born in that land 。 Sāriputra 。If good men and good women 。
聞說 阿彌陀佛 。執持名號。若一日。若二日。
hear of Amitābha Buddha 。recite his name 。for one day 。or two days 。
若三日。若四日。若五日。若六日。若七日。
or three days 。or four days 。or five days 。or six days 。or seven days 。
一心不亂。其人臨命終時。 阿彌陀佛 與諸聖眾。
single-mindedly and without confusion 。at the end of their life 。 Amitābha Buddha with all the sages 。
現在其前。是人終時心不顛倒。
will appear before them 。When those persons die, their mind will not be in delusions 。
即得 往生 阿彌陀佛 極樂國土 。 舍利弗 。
and they will be immediately reborn in the Amitābha Buddha land of Ultimate Bliss 。 Sāriputra 。
我見是利故說此言。若有眾生聞是說者。
I have seen this benefit and so I speak these words 。If sentient beings listen to these words 。
應當發願生彼 國土 。
they must vow to be reborn in that land 。
舍利弗。
Sāriputra 。
如我今者讚歎 阿彌陀佛 不可思議 功德 。東方亦有 阿閦鞞佛 。 須彌相 佛。
Like I now praise inconceivable merits and virtues of Amitābha Buddha 。In the East direction there exist Akshobhya Buddha 。 Signs of Mount Sumeru Buddha 。
大 須彌 佛。須彌光佛。妙音佛。
Great Mount Sumeru Buddha 。Light of Mount Sumeru Buddha 。Wondrous Voice Buddha 。
如是等恒河沙數諸佛。各於其國出廣長舌相。
and countless other such Buddhas 。All in their own land produce signs of wide long tongue 。
遍覆 三千大千世界 說誠實言。
that cover three thousands great worlds (cosmos) and speak the following true words 。
汝等眾生當信是稱讚 不可思議 功德 一切諸佛所護念經。
All of you sentient beings should believe this Sutra that is named Praising Inconceivable Merits and Virtues of All Buddhas Who are Mindful of It 。
舍利弗。南方世界有日月燈佛。名聞光佛。
Sāriputra 。In the worlds of the South direction there exist Lamp of Sun and Moon Buddha 。Light of Renown Buddha 。
大焰肩佛。 須彌 燈佛。無量精進佛。
Great Flaming Shoulders Buddha 。Lamp of Mount Sumeru Buddha 。Infinite Diligence Buddha 。
如是等恒河沙數諸佛。各於其國出廣長舌相。
and countless other such Buddhas 。All in their own land produce signs of wide long tongue 。
遍覆 三千大千世界 說誠實言。
that covers three thousands great worlds and speak the following true words 。
汝等眾生當信是稱讚 不可思議 功德 一切諸佛所護念經。
All of you sentient beings should believe in this Sutra that is named Praising Inconceivable Merits and Virtues of all Buddhas Who are Mindful of It 。
舍利弗。 西方 世界有 無量壽佛 。無量相佛。
Sāriputra 。In the worlds of the West direction there exist Amitāyus 。Infinite Marks Buddha 。
無量幢佛。大光佛。大明佛。寶相佛。淨光佛。
Infinite Banners Buddha 。Great Light Buddha 。Great Clear Buddha 。Marks of Reality Buddha 。Light of Purity Buddha 。
如是等恒河沙數諸佛。
and countless other such Buddhas 。
各於其國出廣長舌相。遍覆 三千大千世界 說誠實言。
All in their own land produce signs of wide long tongue 。that covers three thousands great worlds and speak the following true words 。
汝等眾生。
All of you sentient beings 。
當信是稱讚 不可思議 功德 一切諸佛所護念經。
should believe this Sutra that is named Praising Inconceivable Merits and Virtues of all Mindful Buddhas 。
舍利弗。北方世界有焰肩佛。最勝音佛。
Sāriputra 。In the worlds of the North direction there exist Flaming Shoulders Buddha 。Supreme Voice Buddha 。
難沮佛。日生佛。網明佛。
Unstoppable Buddha 。Born of the Sun Buddha 。Netted Light Buddha 。
如是等恒河沙數諸佛。
and countless other such Buddhas 。
各於其國出廣長舌相遍覆 三千大千世界 說誠實言。汝等眾生。
All in their own land produce signs of wide long tongue that covers three thousands great worlds and speak the following true words 。All of you sentient beings 。
當信是稱讚 不可思議 功德 一切諸佛所護念經。
should believe in this Sutra that is named Praising Inconceivable Merits and Virtues of all Mindful Buddhas 。
舍利弗。下方世界有師子佛。名聞佛。
Sāriputra 。In the worlds below ( in the nadir direction) there exist Lion Buddha 。Renown Buddha 。
名光佛。達摩佛。法幢佛。持法佛。
Name Light Buddha 。Bodhidharma Buddha 。Dharma Banner Buddha 。Upholding the Dharma Buddha 。
如是等恒河沙數諸佛。各於其國出廣長舌相。
and countless other such Buddhas 。All in their own land produce signs of wide long tongue 。
遍覆 三千大千世界 說誠實言。汝等眾生。
that covers three thousands great worlds and speak the following true words 。All of you sentient beings 。
當信是稱讚 不可思議 功德 一切諸佛所護念經。
should believe this Sutra that is named Praising Inconceivable Merits and Virtues of all Mindful Buddhas 。
舍利弗。上方世界有 梵音 佛。宿王佛。
Sāriputra 。In the worlds of the above (zenith) direction, there exist Pure Voice Buddha 。Beautiful King Buddha 。
香上佛。香光佛。大焰肩佛。雜色寶華嚴身佛。
Incense Fragrance Buddha 。Fragrant Light Buddha 。Great Flaming Shoulders Buddha 。Colorful and Precious Flower Adornment Body Buddha 。
娑羅樹王佛。寶華德佛。見一切義佛。如 須彌山 佛。
Sala Tree King Buddha 。Precious Flower Virtue Buddha 。See All Truths Buddha 。Like Mount Sumeru Buddha 。
如是等恒河沙數諸佛。各於其國。
and countless other such Buddhas 。All in their own land 。
出廣長舌相。遍覆 三千大千世界 說誠實言。
produce signs of wide long tongue 。that covers three thousands great worlds (the whole cosmos) and speak the following true words 。
汝等眾生。
All of you sentient beings 。
當信是稱讚 不可思議 功德 一切諸佛所護念經。
should believe this Sutra that is named Praising Inconceivable Merits and Virtues of all Mindful Buddhas 。
舍利弗。於汝意云何。
Sāriputra 。 What do you think ? 。
何故名為一切諸佛所護念經。 舍利弗 。若有 善男子 善女人。
Why is it named All Mindful Buddhas Sutra 。 Sāriputra 。If good men and good women 。
聞是經受持者。及聞諸佛名者。
listen to this Sutra, accept and uphold it 。and also hear the names of all Buddhas 。
是諸 善男子 善女人。皆為一切諸佛共所護念。
then all these good sons and good women 。will be protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas 。
皆得 不退轉 於阿耨多羅三藐 三菩提 。是故 舍利弗 。
All will be non-retroprogressed from the Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment 。For this reason Sāriputra 。
汝等皆當信受我語及諸佛所說。
You all should believe and accept my words and those of other Buddhas 。
舍利弗。若有人已發願。今發願。當發願。
Sāriputra 。if there are persons who had taken a vow 。or is now taking a vow 。or will take a vow 。
欲生 阿彌陀佛 國者。是諸人等。
to be reborn in the land of Amitābha Buddha 。then such persons 。
皆得 不退轉 於阿耨多羅三藐 三菩提 。於彼 國土 若已生。
will be non-retroprogressed from the Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment 。 In that land such persons had been born 。
若今生。若當生。是故 舍利弗 。
or are now being born 。or will be born 。For this reason Sāriputra 。
諸 善男子 善女人。若有信者。應當發願生彼 國土 。
all good men and good women 。if they believe 。must make a vow to be born in that land 。
舍利弗。如我今者稱讚諸佛 不可思議 功德 。
Sāriputra 。I am now praising the inconceivable merits and virtues of all Buddhas 。
彼諸佛等。亦稱說我 不可思議 功德 。
Those Buddhas 。are also praising my inconceivable merits and virtues 。
而作是言。 釋迦牟尼佛 能為甚難希有之事。
and they say 。 Śākyamuni Buddha was capable of completing a very difficult and extraordinary task 。
能於 娑婆 國土 五 濁惡世 。劫濁。 見濁 。
He was capable in the age of the five evil corruptions of this Saha world 。the corruption of the age 。the corruption of views 。
煩惱濁。眾生濁。命濁中。得阿耨多羅三藐 三菩提 。
the corruption of afflictions 。the corruption of sentient beings 。and the corruption of life 。to attain Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment 。
為諸眾生。說是一切世間難信之法。
Because of all sentient beings 。he speaks this Dharma that is difficult to believe by all beings in the world 。
舍利弗當知。我於五 濁惡世 。行此難事。
Sāriputra must know 。In this age of five evil corruptions 。I have accomplished this difficult task 。
得阿耨多羅三藐 三菩提 。為一切世間。
by attaining Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment 。Because of all beings in the world 。
說此難信之法。是為甚難。佛說此經已。
I have spoken this Dharma that is difficult to believe 。It is a very difficult task ! 。When Buddha had finished speaking this Sutra 。
舍利弗及諸 比丘 。一切 世間天 人阿修羅等。
Sāriputra with all Bhikshus 。all gods, humans and asuras in this world 。
聞佛所說歡喜信受。作禮而去。
having heard what Buddha said, rejoiced, believed and accepted it 。They all bowed in homage and withdrew 。
