如是我聞。一時佛在 舍衛國 祇樹 給孤獨 園。
Thus have I heard 。Once Buddha resided in the country of Śrāvastī , at the Jeta (Victory) Grove of Anathapindika (Provider to the Orphans and the Solitaires) 。
與大 比丘 眾千二百五十人俱。
with a grand assembly of one thousand two hundred fifty Bhiksus (monks) 。
爾時 世尊 食時著衣持鉢入 舍衛 大城乞食。
At that time, near meal time, World-Honored One put on a robe, hold his alm bowl and entered the great city of Shravasti to beg for alms 。
於其城中次第乞已。還至本處飯食訖。
In that city, after begging successively from door to door, he returned to his retreat. When he finished eating,
收衣鉢洗足已敷座而坐。時長老 須菩提 在大眾中。
he put away his robe and his alm bowl, washed his feet, spread a seating mat and sat down 。At that time, Venerable Subhūti (Good Apparition), in the assembly,
即從座起偏袒右肩右膝著地。
rose from his seat, uncovered his right shoulder, knelt on the right knee to the ground,
合掌恭敬而白佛言。希有 世尊 。 如來 善護念諸 菩薩 。
and, with his palms joined together, respectfully said to Buddha: It’s extraordinary, World-honored One, the Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) is well supportive of all Bodhisattvas ,
善付囑諸 菩薩 。 世尊 。 善男子 善女人。
and entrusting so well all Bodhisattvas 。World-honored One, if good men and good women
發阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提心 。
engender the mind of Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment 。
應云何住云何降伏其心。佛言。善哉善哉。 須菩提 。如汝所說。
how should they abide there and how should they subdue their mind ? 。Buddha said: Excellent! Excellent ! Subhūti , just as you say,
如來善護念諸 菩薩 。善付囑諸菩薩。
The Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) always protects and is well mindful of all Bodhisattvas and is well enstrusting all Bodhisattvas 。
汝今諦聽。當為汝說。 善男子 善女人。
Listen carefully! Because of you, I will instruct how good men and good women,
發阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提心 。
when they engender the mind of Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment,
應如是住如是降伏其心。唯然 世尊 。願樂欲聞。
will be able to abide there and subdue their mind 。Yes, World-honored One, I would joyfully want to listen.
佛告 須菩提 。
Buddha said to Subhūti :
諸 菩薩 摩訶薩應如是降伏其心。所有一切眾生之類。
All Great Bodhisattvas should subdue their mind as follows 。All sentient beings
若 卵生 若胎生若 濕生 若化生。若有色若無色。若有想若無想。
whether egg-born, womb-born, wetness- born, or born of transformation; whether with form or no form; whether with thought or no thought 。
若 非有 想非無想。
or whether neither with thought nor without thought,
我皆令入 無餘涅槃 而滅度之。如是滅度無量無數無邊眾生。
I will lead all to enter the No-Residual (complete) Nirvana to be liberated。Though I have liberated an infinite, countless and boundless number of sentient beings,
實無眾生得滅度者。何以故。 須菩提 。
in reality not one sentient is getting liberated 。Why? Subhūti !
若 菩薩 有我相人相眾生相 壽者相 。即 非菩薩 。
If a Bodhisattva still has the images of a self, the images of a person, the images of sentient beings or the images of a life span , then he is not a Bodhisattva 。
復次 須菩提 。
Furthermore, Subhūti ,
菩薩於法應 無所住 行於布施。所謂不住色布施。
A Bodhisattva in the Dharma should not dwell anywhere in the practice of charity 。He should not dwell in the forms of charity, 。
不住聲香味觸法布施。 須菩提 。 菩薩 應如是布施不住於相。
in the sounds, odors, tastes, sensations or ideas of charity 。 Subhūti , a Bodhisattva should thus be charitable, not dwelling in such images 。
何以故。若 菩薩 不住相布施。
Why? If a Bodhisattva does not dwell in the images of charity 。
其福德不可思量。 須菩提 。於意云何。東方虛空可思量不。
his blessings and virtues are impossible to calculate or measure 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。Is it possible to calculate the empty space in the East direction, no? 。
不也 世尊 。 須菩提 。
No, it is impossible, World-honored One 。 Subhūti 。
南西北方四維上下虛空可思量不。不也 世尊 。 須菩提 。
Is it possible to estimate the empty space in the South, West, North directions, four corners, above and below ? 。No, it is impossible, World-honored One 。 Subhūti 。
菩薩無住相布施福德。亦復如是不可思量。 須菩提 。
If a Bodhisattva does not dwell in the images of charity, his blessings and virtues are similarly incalculable 。 Subhūti 。
菩薩但應如所教住。
The Bodhisattvas should do so, according to my teaching 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。可以身相見 如來 不。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。Is it possible to use body signs to see the Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ), no? 。
不也 世尊 。不可以身相得見 如來 。
No, it is impossible, World-honored One 。It is impossible to use body signs to see the Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。
何以故。 如來 所說身相即非身相。佛告 須菩提 。
Why? When The Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) speaks of body signs, then they are not body signs 。Buddha said to Subhūti 。
凡所有相皆是虛妄。
If signs exist, then they must be false 。
若見諸相非相則見 如來 。
Seeing all signs as not signs, then one sees the Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。
須 菩提 白佛言。 世尊 。
Subhūti said to Buddha 。World-honored One 。
頗有眾生得聞如是言說章句生實信不。佛告 須菩提 。
Are there sentient beings who, when listening to the words of this discourse and these sentences, will give rise to the perfect belief ? 。Buddha said to Subhūti 。
莫作是說。 如來 滅後後五百歲。
Do not ask so 。Five hundred years after the Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) entrance to Nirvana,
有持戒修福者。於此章句能生信心以此為實。
if someone will uphold the precepts and cultivate the blessings, the words of this discourse will be able to give rise in him a belief that is consistent with the truth 。
當知是人不於一佛二佛三四 五佛 而種善根。
It must be known that person had cultivated good roots not only with one Buddha, two Buddhas, three, four, five Buddhas 。
已於無量千萬佛所種諸善根。
but with an infinite number of Buddhas 。
聞是章句乃至一念生淨信者。 須菩提 。
For those who listen to the words of this discourse and give rise even only one thought of a pure belief 。 Subhūti 。
如來悉知悉見是諸眾生得如是無量福德。何以故。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) fully knows and fully sees that all these sentient beings obtain infinite blessings and virtues 。Why ?
是諸眾生無復我相人相眾生相 壽者相 。
Because all these sentient beings no longer have images of a self, images of a human, images of sentient beings, or images of a life span 。
無 法相 亦無非法相。何以故。是諸眾生。
no images of the Dharma and also no images of the non-Dharma 。Why ? Because all these sentient beings 。
若心取相則為著我人眾生壽者。
if they are still attached to images, then they still are attached to a self, a person, sentient beings or a life span 。
若取 法相 即著我人眾生壽者。何以故。若取非法相。
If they are still attached to the images of Dharma, then they still are attached to a self, a person, sentient beings or a life span 。Why ? Or attaching to the images of non-Dharma 。
即著我人眾生壽者。是故不應取法。
leads to an attachment to the images of a self, a person, sentient beings or a life span 。For this reason one should not attach to the Dharma 。
不應取非法。以是義故。 如來 常說汝等 比丘 。
or the non-Dharma 。For this reason。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) often said: Bhiksus (monk) 。
知我說法如筏喻者。法尚應捨何況非法。
You should know the Dharma that I have expounded is like a raft 。Even the Dharma should be abandoned, much less the non-Dharma 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
如來得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 耶。如來有 所說法 耶。 須菩提 言。
Did the Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) attain the Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment ? Has the Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) expounded the Dharma ? Subhūti responded 。
如我解佛所說義。
As I have understood the teachings of the Buddha 。
無有定法名阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。亦無有定法 如來 可說。何以故。
There is no certain Dharma named supreme and perfect enlightenment, and also no certain Dharma that Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) can expound 。Why ?
如來 所說法 皆不可取不可說。非法非非法。
Because the Dharma that Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) expounds is impossible to attach to and impossible to be spoken 。It is neither Dharma nor non-Dharma 。
所以者何。
Why so? 。
一切賢聖皆以無為法而有差別。 須菩提 。於意云何。
Because all sages differenciate themselves by the unconditioned Dharma 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
若人滿 三千大千世界 。 七寶 以用布施。是人所得福德寧為多不。
Suppose someone would fill three thousands great worlds (one billion worlds) 。with seven jewels for charity ,。would his blessings and virtues be plentiful, no? 。
須 菩提 言。甚多 世尊 。何以故。
Subhūti replied 。Very plentiful, World-honored One 。Why ?。
是福德即非福德性。是故 如來 說福德多。
Because those blessings and virtues do not have the nature of blessings and virtues 。For this reason, Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) says that his blessings and virtues are plentiful 。
若復有人於此經中。受持乃至四句偈等為他人說。
If again someone would just accept and uphold four lines of verse from this Sutra and explain them to others 。
其福勝彼。何以故。 須菩提 。
the blessings and virtues of this person would be greater than those of the previous one 。Why ? Subhūti 。
一切諸佛及諸佛阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 法皆從此經出。
All Buddhas and the Dharma for supreme and perfect enlightenment of all Buddhas all originate from this Sutra 。
須 菩提 。所謂 佛法 者即非佛法。
Subhūti 。It is called the Buddha’s Dharma but in reality it is not the Buddha’s Dharma 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。 須陀洹 能作是念。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。A Strotapanna may think 。
我得 須陀洹 果不。 須菩提 言。不也 世尊 。何以故。
Do I get the Strotapanna (stream-enterer) stage, no? 。 Subhūti replied 。No, World-honored One 。Why ?。
須陀洹名為 入流 而無所入。
The Strotapanna is called Stream Enterer because there is no entering to anywhere 。
不入色聲香味觸法。是名 須陀洹 。 須菩提 。於意云何。
no entering into forms, sound, smell, taste, sensations or ideas 。That is why he is called a Strotapanna 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
斯陀含能作是念。我得 斯陀含果 不。
A Sakridagami (once-returner) may think 。Do I get the Sakridagami stage, no? 。
須 菩提 言。不也 世尊 。何以故。 斯陀含 名 一往 來。
Subhūti replied 。No, World-honored One 。Why ? 。A Sakridagami is called the Once Returner (one with One-More-Rebirth) 。
而實無往來。是名 斯陀含 。 須菩提 。於意云何。
but really there is neither coming nor going 。That is why he is called a Sakridagami 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
阿那含能作是念。我得 阿那含果 不。
An Anagami (Non-returner) may think 。Do I get the Anagami stage, no? 。
須 菩提 言。不也 世尊 。何以故。
Subhūti replied 。No, World-honored One 。Why ? 。
阿那含名為 不來 而實無來。是故名阿那含。 須菩提 。
An Anagami is called a Non-Returner but really there is no non-return 。For this reason he is called an Anagami 。 Subhūti 。
於意云何。 阿羅漢 能作是念。我得阿羅漢道不。
What do you think? 。An Arhat may think 。Do I get the Arhat’s stage, no? 。
須 菩提 言。不也 世尊 。何以故。
Subhūti replied 。No, World-honored One 。Why ? 。
實無有法名 阿羅漢 。 世尊 。若阿羅漢作是念。
Because really there is no Dharma called Arhat 。World-honored One 。If the Arhat thinks 。
我得 阿羅漢 道。即為著我人眾生壽者。 世尊 。
that he gets the Arhats hip 。he will still be attached to the images of a self, a person, sentient beings or a life span 。World-honored One 。
佛說我得無諍 三昧 人中最為第一。
Buddha said that I have attained Aranyaka Samadhi that is best among humans 。
是第一離欲 阿羅漢 。我不作是念。我是離欲阿羅漢。 世尊 。
that I am the first Arhat free of desire 。I do not think that I am an Arhat free of desire 。World-honored One 。
我若作是念我得 阿羅漢 道。
If I think that I get the Arhat’s stage 。
世尊則不說 須菩提 是樂阿蘭那行者。
then World-honored One has said that Subhūti likes to be an Alanna (pure solitude) practitioner 。
以 須菩提 實無所行。而名須菩提是樂阿蘭那行。
Because Subhūti really has no such practice 。and that is why Subhūti likes the Alanna practice 。
佛告 須菩提 。於意云何。
Buddha said to Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
如來昔在 然燈佛 所。於 法有 所得不。 世尊 。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) in ancient times was with Buddha Dīpaṃkara 。 Did I attain any Dharma, no? 。World-honored One 。
如來在 然燈佛 所。於法實 無所得 。 須菩提 。於意云何。
When Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) was with Buddha Dīpaṃkara 。 you did not attain any Dharma 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
菩薩莊嚴 佛土 不。不也 世尊 。何以故。
Do the Bodhisattva adorn the Buddha lands, no? 。No, World-honored One 。Why ? 。
莊嚴 佛土 者則非莊嚴。是名莊嚴。是故 須菩提 。
Adorning Buddha lands is not an adornment 。It is called an adornment 。For this reason Subhūti 。
諸 菩薩 摩訶薩應如是生清淨心。
all Great Bodhisattvas should give rise to such pure mind 。
不應住色生心。不應住聲香味觸法生心。
He should not dwell in forms when giving rise to that mind 。should not dwell in sound , smell, taste, sensations, or ideas when giving rise to that mind 。
應 無所住 而生其心。 須菩提 。
He should not dwell in anything when giving rise to that mind 。 Subhūti 。
譬如有人身如 須彌山 王。於意云何。是身為大不。 須菩提 言。
For example, suppose there would be somebody with a body as great as Mount Sumeru 。What do you think? 。Would that body be great, no? 。 Subhūti replied 。
甚大 世尊 。何以故。佛說非身是名大身。
Very great, World-honored One 。Why ? 。Buddha has said it is not a body and that is why it is called a great body 。
須 菩提 。如恒河中所有沙數。如是沙等恒河。
Subhūti 。Suppose there would be Ganges Rivers equalled to the number of grains of sand in 。the Ganges River 。
於意云何。是諸恒河沙寧為多不。 須菩提 言。
What do you think? 。Would the amount of sand of in all those Ganges Rivers be great, no? 。 Subhūti replied 。
甚多 世尊 。但諸恒河尚多無數。何況其沙。
Very great, World-honored One 。All those Ganges Rivers would already be countless 。much more the amount of sand in them 。
須 菩提 。我今實言告汝。若有 善男子 善女人。
Subhūti 。I am now telling you the truth 。Suppose there would be a good man or a good woman 。
以 七寶 滿爾所恒河沙數 三千大千世界 。
who would use seven jewels to fill countless three thousands great worlds (one billion worlds) 。
以用布施得福多不。 須菩提 言。甚多 世尊 。
for charity, would he get many blessings, no? 。 Subhūti replied 。Many, World-honored One 。
佛告 須菩提 。若 善男子 善女人。
Buddha said to Subhūti 。If a good man or good woman。
於此經中乃至受持四句偈等。為他人說。
would only accept and uphold four lines of verse in this Sutra 。and would explain them to others 。
而此福德勝前福德。
then these blessings and virtues would be more plentiful than the previous ones 。
復次 須菩提 。隨說是經乃至四句偈等。
Furthermore Subhūti 。Wherever this Sutra is expounded, even four lines of verse 。
當知此處一切 世間天 人阿修羅。
it must be known that that is the place where all gods, humans and asuras (titans) in this world 。
皆 應供 養如佛塔廟。何況有人盡能受持讀誦。 須菩提 。
will make offerings similar to a Buddhist stupa or temple 。How much more so if there will be some people who will accept, uphold, read and recite the whole Sutra 。 Subhūti 。
當知是人成就最上第一希有之法。
It must be known those persons will have attained the supreme, extraordinary and best Dharma 。
若是經典所在之處。則為有佛若尊重弟子。
Wherever exists this Sutra 。that is where Buddha or his honored disciples reside 。
爾時 須菩提 白佛言。 世尊 。當何名此經。
At that time Subhūti said to Buddha 。World-honored One: “What is the name of this Sutra ?
我等云何奉持。佛告 須菩提 。
How do we faithfully uphold it?” Buddha said to Subhūti 。
是經名為金剛 般若波羅蜜 。以是名字汝當奉持。所以者何。
This Sutra is named Diamond Perfection of Wisdom 。Use this name to faithfully uphold it 。Why so? 。
須 菩提 。佛說 般若波羅蜜 。
Subhūti 。Buddha speaks the Perfection of Wisdom 。
則非 般若波羅蜜 。 須菩提 。於意云何。 如來 有 所說法 不。
then it is not perfection of wisdom 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。Has Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) expounded the Dharma, no? 。
須 菩提 白佛言。 世尊 。 如來 無所說。須菩提。
Subhūti said to Buddha 。World-honored One 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has not 。Subhūti 。
於意云何。
What do you think? 。
三千 大千世界 所有微塵是為多不 須菩提 言。甚多 世尊 。須菩提。
Would one billion worlds have many dust particles , no ? Subhūti said 。Many, World-honored One 。Subhūti 。
諸微塵 如來 說非微塵。是名微塵。如來說世界非世界。
Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has said that these dust particles are not dust particles 。that is why they are called dust particles 。Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has said that a world is not a world 。
是名世界。 須菩提 。於意云何。
that is why it is called a world 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
可以三十二相見 如來 不。不也 世尊 。
Is it possible to use thirty-two marks to view Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ), no? 。No World-honored One 。
不可以三十二相得見 如來 。何以故。
It is not possible to use thirty-two marks to view Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。Why ? 。
如來說三十二相即是非相。是名三十二相。 須菩提 。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has said that thirty-two marks are not thirty two marks 。They are called thirty-two marks 。 Subhūti 。
若有 善男子 善女人。以恒河沙等身命布施。
if there was a good man or good woman 。who would use his/her bodies and lives equalled to the amount of sand of the Ganges River for charity 。
若復有人於此經中乃至受持四句偈等。
or again, if there would be someone who would only accept and uphold four lines of verse in this Sutra 。
為他人說其福甚多。
and would explain them to others, then he/she would have obtained many blessings 。
爾時 須菩提 聞說是經深解義趣。
At that time, Subhūti listened to this Sutra and understood its deep meanings 。
涕淚悲泣而白佛言。希有 世尊 。
He was in tear, cried and said to Buddha 。It is extraordinary, World-honored One 。
佛說如是甚深經典。我從昔來所得慧眼。
Buddha has expounded this very deep Sutra 。Since I have attained the wisdom eye 。
未曾得聞如是之經。 世尊 。若復有人得聞是經。
I have not heard such Sutra 。World-honored One 。If there is someone who listens to this Sutra 。
信心清淨則生實相。當知是人成就第一希有 功德 。
and gives rise to a pure mind, then he/she has attained the signs of the Truth 。It should be known that person has attained the best and extraordinary merits and virtues 。
世尊。是實相者則是非相。是故 如來 說名實相。
World-honored One 。The signs of the Truth are not signs of the Truth 。for this reason Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) calls them signs of the Truth 。
世尊。我今得聞如是經典。
World-honored One 。I now have heard this Sutra 。
信解受持不足為難。若當來世後五百歲。
and I have no difficulty in believing, understanding , accepting and upholding it 。But in the future , after five hundred years 。
其有眾生得聞是經信解受持。是人則為第一希有。
if there are sentient beings who, after hearing this Sutra, will believe, understand, accept and uphold it。 then they will have accomplished the best and extraordinary act 。
何以故。此 人無我 相人相眾生相 壽者相 。
Why ? 。 Because those persons no longer have signs of a self, signs of a person, signs of sentient beings or signs of a life span 。
所以者何。我相即是非相。
Why so? 。Because signs of a self are not signs 。
人相眾生相 壽者相 即是非相。何以故。離一切諸相則名諸佛。
signs of a person, sentient beings or a life span are also not signs 。Why ? 。Being free of all signs is then Buddhahood 。
佛告 須菩提 。如是如是若復有人得聞是經。
Buddha said to Subhūti 。It is so true! It is so true ! If someone hears this Sutra 。
不驚不怖不畏。當知是人甚為希有。何以故。
and is not surprised , not in fear and not shy 。 then he/she must be a very extraordinary person 。Why ? 。
須 菩提 。
Subhūti 。
如來說第一 波羅蜜 非第一波羅蜜。是名第一波羅蜜。 須菩提 。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) speaks of the first perfection (paramita) but it is not the first perfection (paramita) 。That is why it is called the first perfection (paramita) 。 Subhūti 。
忍辱 波羅蜜 如來 說非忍辱波羅蜜。何以故。 須菩提 。
The forbearance perfection (paramita) that Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) speaks is not forbearance perfection (paramita) 。Why ? 。 Subhūti 。
如我昔為 歌利王 割截身體。
Like me, in ancient time, my body was cut by King Kali into pieces 。
我於爾時 無我 相無人相無眾生相無 壽者相 。何以故。
At that time , I did not have signs of a self, signs of a person, sign of sentient beings or signs of a life span 。Why ? 。
我於往昔節節支解時。
In that ancient time 。
若有我相人相眾生相 壽者相 應生瞋恨。 須菩提 。
if I still had signs of a self, signs of a person, signs of sentient beings or signs of a life span, how could I not be angry and hateful? 。 Subhūti 。
又念過去於 五百世 作 忍辱仙 人。
I also remember the past, in my five hundred lives when I was a an ascetic practicing tolerance 。
於爾所世 無我 相無人相無眾生相無 壽者相 。是故 須菩提 。
In those lifetimes, I never had signs of a self, signs of a person, signs of sentient beings or signs of a life span 。For this reason, Subhūti 。
菩薩應離一切相發阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提
A Bodhisattva should be free of all signs when engendering the mind of supreme and perfect enlightenment
心。不應住色生心。
He should not abide in forms when giving rise to that mind 。
不應住聲香味觸法生心。應生 無所住 心。
He should not abide in sound , smell, taste, sensations, or ideas when giving rise to that mind 。He should not abide in anything when giving rise to that mind 。
若心有住則為非住。是故佛說 菩薩 心不應住色布施。
If the mind is attached, then make it non-attached to anything 。For this reason Buddha has said the Bodhisattva mind should not abide to forms of charity 。
須 菩提 。 菩薩 為利益一切眾生。應如是布施。
Subhūti , for benefits of all sentient beings 。the Boddhisattvas should thus behave when performing charity 。
如來說一切諸相即是非相。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has said that all signs are not signs 。
又說一切眾生則非眾生。 須菩提 。 如來 是真語者。實語者。
He has also said all sentient beings are not sentient beings 。 Subhūti 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has spoken the truth。
如語者。不誑語者。不異語者。 須菩提 。
has not spoken falsely。 with deception 。or with contradiction 。 Subhūti 。
如來所得法此法無實無虛。 須菩提 。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has attained a Dharma that is neither true nor false 。 Subhūti 。
若 菩薩 心住於法而行布施。如人入闇則無所見。
if the Bodhisattva mind abides in the Dharma while practicing charity 。then it will be like a person entering darkness and seeing nothing 。
若 菩薩 心不住法而行布施。
If the Bodhisattva mind does not abide in the Dharma while practicing charity 。
如人有目日光明照見種種色。 須菩提 。
it will be like a like person, with eyes in bright sunlight, seeing clearly all kinds of forms and colors 。 Subhūti 。
當來之世若有 善男子 善女人。能於此經受持讀誦。
In future lives, if there will be a good man or good woman 。capable of accepting, upholding , reading and reciting this Sutra 。
則為 如來 以佛智慧悉知是人。悉見是人。
then Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) will use the Buddha's wisdom to fully know and fully see that person 。
皆得成就無量無邊 功德 。
He/she will get infinite boundless merits and virtues 。
須 菩提 。若有 善男子 善女人。
Subhūti 。Suppose there were a good man or good woman 。
初日分以恒河沙等身布施。
in the morning would use his/her own bodies and lives equalled to the grains of sand of Ganges River for charity 。
中日分復以恒河沙等身布施。後日分亦以恒河沙等身布施。
by mid-day again would use his/her own bodies and lives equalled to the grains of sand of Ganges River for charity 。and in the afternoon also would use his/her own bodies and lives equalled to the grains of sand of Ganges River for charity 。
如是無量百千萬億劫以身布施。
thus in infinite and hundred thousand billion lifetimes would use his /her own bodies for charity 。
若復有人聞此經典信心不逆其福勝彼。
or again suppose there would be a person , after listening to this Sutra, would give rise to a pure belief, then his blessings and virtues would be greater than those of the previous person 。
何況書寫受持讀誦為人解說。 須菩提 。以要言之。
How much more so if someone would copy, accept, uphold , read, recite and would explain to others 。 Subhūti 。In summary。
是經有 不可思議 不可稱量無邊 功德 。
this Sutra has limitless, inconceivable and immeasurable merits and virtues 。
如來為發 大乘 者說。為發 最上乘 者說。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has expounded it for those engendering the Grand Vehicle ( Mahayana ) mind 。and for those engendering a very superior mind 。
若有人能受持讀誦廣為人說。 如來 悉知是人悉見是人。
If there is someone capable of accepting, upholding, reading, reciting and explaining the Sutra to others 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) fully knows and sees that such a person 。
皆得成就不可量不可稱無有邊 不可思議
will get immeasurable, innombrable, limitless and inconceivable
功德。
merits and virtues 。
如是人等則為荷擔 如來 阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。何以故。 須菩提 。若樂小法者。
Only those beings are capable to carry on the supreme and perfect enlightenment Dharma of Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。Why ? 。 Subhūti 。If someone likes the small Dharma 。
著我見人見眾生見壽者見。
and who is still attached to the images of a self, a person , sentient beings or ideas 。
則於此經不能聽受讀誦為人解說。 須菩提 。
then he/she will not be able to hear, accept, read, and recite this Sutra and explain it to others 。 Subhūti 。
在在處處若有此經。
Wherever has this Sutra 。
一切 世間天 人阿修羅所 應供 養。當知此處則為是塔。
that is the place where all gods, humans and asuras in this world should make offering 。It must be known that it is the place to build a stupa 。
皆應恭敬作禮圍繞以諸華香而散其處。
All should pay respect there, circumambulate and scatter flowers and incense over it 。
復次 須菩提 。 善男子 善女人受持讀誦此經。
Moreover, Subhūti 。If a good man or good woman accepts, upholds , reads and recites this Sutra 。
若為人輕賤。是人先世罪業應墮惡道。
but he/she is now despised or insulted 。Because of sins and bad deeds in previous lives that caused him/her to fall in evil paths 。
以今世人輕賤故。先世罪業則為消滅。
and to be now despised or insulted 。then his/hers sins and bad deeds in previous lives will be destroyed and he/she 。
當得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。 須菩提 。
will attain Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment 。 Subhūti 。
我念過去無量 阿僧祇 劫。於 然燈佛 前。
I remember the past, in infinite and incalculable lives 。 before the times of Dīpaṃkara Buddha 。
得值八百四千萬億 那由他 諸佛。
I had met eight hundred four thousand billion nayutas Buddhas 。
悉皆供養承事無空過者。若復有人於後 末世 。
I had made offerings to all of them, and served them all without exception。Suppose there would be someone in the future Dharma- ending age 。
能受持讀誦此經所得 功德 。於我所供養諸佛功德。
who would be able to accept, uphold, read and recite this Sutra, then he/she would get merits and virtues 。 that would be, compared to my merits and virtues in making offerings to all those Buddhas, 。
百分不及一。
greater by a factor of one hundred 。
千萬億分乃至算數譬喻所不能及。 須菩提 。若 善男子 善女人於後 末世 。
greater by a factor of a trillion, even incalculably and incomparably greater 。 Subhūti 。If a good man or a good woman in the future Dharma- ending age 。
有受持讀誦此經。所得 功德 我若具說者。
will be able to accept , uphold, read and recite this Sutra 。he/she will get unsurpassed merits and virtues . If I fully explain 。
或有人聞心則狂亂狐疑不信。 須菩提 。
there will be some listeners who give rise to crazy, confused and doubtful mind 。 Subhūti 。
當知是經義 不可思議 果報 亦不可思議。
It must be known that the meanings of this Sutra are inconceivable and, hence, its effects are also inconceivable 。
爾時 須菩提 白佛言。 世尊 。 善男子 善女人。
At that time Subhūti said to Buddha 。World-honored One 。If a good man or good woman 。
發阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提心 。
engenders the supreme and perfect enlightenment mind 。
云何應住云何降伏其心佛告 須菩提 。
how should he/she abide there, how should he/she subdue his/her mind ? Buddha said to Subhūti 。
善男子善女人發阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 者。當生如是心。
A good man or good woman when engendering the supreme and perfect enlightenment mind 。should give rise to the following mind 。
我應滅度一切眾生。
I should liberate all sentient beings 。
滅度一切眾生已而無有一眾生實滅度者。何以故。 須菩提 。
Having liberated all sentient beings, but there is not one sentient being really liberated 。Why ? 。 Subhūti 。
若 菩薩 有我相人相眾生相 壽者相 則 非菩薩 。
If a Bodhisattva still attaches to signs of a self, signs of a person, signs of sentient beings or signs of a life span, then it is not a Bodhisattva 。
所以者何。 須菩提 。
Why so? 。 Subhūti 。
實無有法發阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 者。 須菩提 。於意云何。
Because there really does not exist the Dharma for engendering the supreme and perfect enlightenment mind 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
如來於 然燈佛 所有法得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 不。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) was with Buddha Dīpaṃkara . Did I attain the supreme and perfect enlightenment Dharma, no? 。
不也 世尊 。如我解佛所說義。
No, World-honored One 。As I understand the Buddha’s teaching 。
佛於 然燈佛 所無有法得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。佛言。
When the Buddha was with Buddha Dīpaṃkara, you did not attain the Dharma for supreme and perfect enlightenment 。Buddha said 。
如是如是。 須菩提 。
It is so true, It is so true 。 Subhūti 。
實無有法 如來 得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。 須菩提 。
There really does not exist a Dharma by which Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) attained supreme and perfect enlightenment 。 Subhūti 。
若有法 如來 得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 者。
If there is a Dharma by which Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) attained supreme and perfect enlightenment 。
然燈佛則不與我受記。汝於來世當得作佛。
then Buddha Dīpaṃkara did not bestow upon me the following prediction 。In the future, you will become a Buddha 。
號 釋迦牟尼 。 何以故。
named Śākyamuni 。Why ?
如來者即諸法如義。
Because Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) is the Buddha-nature of all things 。
若有人言 如來 得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。 須菩提 。
if there is somebody who says that Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has attained supreme and perfect enlightenment 。 Subhūti 。
實無有法佛得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。 須菩提 。
then there really does not exist a Dharma by which the Buddha attained supreme and perfect enlightenment 。 Subhūti 。
如來所得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。於是中無實無虛。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) attained supreme and perfect enlightenment 。 This enlightenment is neither true nor false 。
是故 如來 說 一切法 皆是 佛法 。 須菩提 。
For this reason, Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has said that all Dharma s are the Buddha’s Dharmas 。 Subhūti 。
所言 一切法 者。即非一切法。是故名一切法。 須菩提 。
All Dharmas that I have spoken。are not all Dharmas 。For this reason they are named all Dharmas 。 Subhūti 。
譬如人身長大。 須菩提 言。 世尊 。
Suppose someone with a great body 。 Subhūti said 。World-honored One 。
如來說人身長大則為非大身。是名大身。 須菩提 。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has said a great human body, but it is not a great body 。That is why it called a great body 。 Subhūti 。
菩薩亦如是。若作是言。
similarly 。If a Boddhisattva says 。
我當滅度無量眾生則不名 菩薩 。何以故。 須菩提 。
I have to liberate infinite sentient beings, then he is not a Bodhisattva 。Why ? 。 Subhūti 。
實無有法名為 菩薩 。
There really does not exist a Dharma named Bodhisattva 。
是故佛說一切 法無我 無人無眾生無壽者。 須菩提 。若 菩薩 作是言。
For this reason, Buddha has said all Dharmas have no images of a self, a person, sentient beings or a life span 。 Subhūti 。If a Bodhisattva says 。
我當莊嚴 佛土 。是不名 菩薩 。何以故。
I will adorn the Buddha land 。then he is not called a Bodhisattva 。Why ? 。
如來說莊嚴 佛土 者。即非莊嚴是名莊嚴。 須菩提 。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has said adornments of the Buddha land 。then they are not adornments of the Buddha land . They are called adornments 。 Subhūti 。
若 菩薩 通達 無我 法者。 如來 說名真是菩薩。
If a Bodhisattva clearly understands the principle of non-self of all things 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) calls him/her a true Bodhisattva 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。 如來 有肉眼不。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。Does Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) have the human vision no? 。
如是 世尊 。 如來 有肉眼。 須菩提 。於意云何。
So it is, World-honored One 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has the human vision 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
如來有 天眼 不。如是 世尊 。如來有天眼。
Does Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) have the celestial vision, no? 。So it is, World-honored One 。Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has the celestial vision 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。 如來 有慧眼不。如是 世尊 。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。Does Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) have the wisdom eye, no? 。So it is, World-honored One 。
如來有慧眼。 須菩提 。於意云何。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has the wisdom eye 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
如來有 法眼 不。如是 世尊 。如來有法眼。 須菩提 。
Does Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) have the Dharma eye, no? 。So it is, World-honored One 。Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has the Dharma eye 。 Subhūti 。
於意云何。 如來 有 佛眼 不。如是 世尊 。
What do you think? 。Does Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) have the Buddha eye, no? 。So it is, World-honored One 。
如來有 佛眼 。 須菩提 。於意云何。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has the Buddha eye 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
恒河中所有沙佛說是沙不。如是 世尊 。 如來 說是沙。
For all the grains of sand in Ganges River, has Buddha called that sand, no? 。So it is, World-honored One 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has called that sand 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
如一恒河中所有沙有如是等恒河。是諸恒河所有沙數 佛世界 。
If all the grains of sand in Ganges River would be Ganges Rivers, and all the grains of sand in all these Ganges Rivers would be Buddha lands 。
如是寧為多不。甚多 世尊 。佛告 須菩提 。
these Buddha lands would be numerous, no? 。Very numerous, World-honored One 。Buddha said to Subhūti 。
爾所 國土 中所有眾生若干種心 如來 悉知。
All kinds of mind of sentient beings in those land s would be fully known to Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。
何以故。 如來 說諸心皆為非心是名為心。
Why ? 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has said all these kinds of mind are not mind. That is why they are called mind 。
所以者何。 須菩提 。過去心 不可得 。
Why so? 。 Subhūti 。Because the past mind can not be obtained 。
現在心 不可得 。未來心不可得。
the present mind can not be obtained 。and the future mind can not be obtained 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
若有人滿 三千大千世界 七寶 以用布施。
Suppose there were a person who would fill up three thousand great thousand (one billion) worlds with seven jewels for charity 。
是人以是 因緣 得福多不。如是 世尊 。此人以是因緣得福甚多。
would he/she get many blessings because of these causes and conditions , no? 。So it is, World-honored One 。Because of these causes and conditions, he/she would get many blessings 。
須 菩提 。若福德有實。 如來 不說得福德多。
Subhūti 。If blessings and virtues really exist 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) says that he/she would not get many blessings and virtues 。
以福德無故。 如來 說得福德多。
Because blessings and virtues are non-existent。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) says he/she would get many blessings and virtues 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
佛可以具足色身見不。不也 世尊 。 如來 不應以具足色身見。
Is it possible to use the perfect form of the body to see Buddha, no? 。No, World-honored One 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) should not be seen by the perfect form of the body 。
何以故。 如來 說具足色身。即非具足色身。
Why ? 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has said that the perfect form of the body 。is not the perfect form of the body 。
是名具足色身。 須菩提 。於意云何。
That is why it is called the perfect form of the body 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
如來可以具足諸相見不。不也 世尊 。
Is it possible to use auspicious signs to see Thus-Come-One (Tathagata), no? 。No World-honored One 。
如來不應以具足諸相見。何以故。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) should not be seen by auspicious signs 。Why ? 。
如來說諸相具足即非具足。是名諸相具足。 須菩提 。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has said all auspicious signs are not auspicious signs 。That is why they are called auspicious signs 。 Subhūti 。
汝勿謂 如來 作是念。我當有 所說法 。莫作是念。
Do not say that Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) thinks 。I will expound the Dharma 。Absolutely do not think so 。
何以故。若人言 如來 有 所說法 即為謗佛。
Why ? 。If somebody says that Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has expounded the Dharma then he/she will have slandered the Buddha 。
不能解我所說故。 須菩提 。
and can not understand my teachings 。 Subhūti 。
說法者無法可說。是名說法。
Expounding the Dharma but there is no Dharma to be expounded 。That is why it is called expounding the Dharma 。
爾時慧命 須菩提 白佛言。 世尊 。
At that time Venerable Subhūti said to Buddha 。World-honored One 。
頗有眾生於 未來世 。聞說是法生信心不。佛言。
In the future, some sentient beings 。after listening to this Dharma will give rise to the faithful mind, no? 。Buddha said 。
須 菩提 。彼非眾生非不眾生。何以故。
Subhūti 。Those sentient beings are neither sentient beings nor non-sentient beings 。Why ? 。
須 菩提 。眾生眾生者。 如來 說非眾生。是名眾生。
Subhūti 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has said those sentient beings are not sentient beings 。They are called sentient beings 。
須 菩提 白佛言。 世尊 。
Subhūti said to Buddha 。World-honored One 。
佛得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。為 無所得 耶。如是如是。 須菩提 。
Buddha attained Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment 。Does this mean that there is no attainment , no ?。So it is, So it is 。 Subhūti 。
我於阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。
I attained supreme and perfect enlightenment 。
乃至無有少法可得是名阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。
or another Dharma called attainment of nothing . It is called supreme and perfect enlightenment 。
復次 須菩提 。是 法平等 無有高下。
Furthermore, Subhūti 。that Dharma is equanimous, neither high nor low 。
是名阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。
It is called supreme and perfect enlightenment 。
以 無我 無人無眾生無壽者。
By having non-self, non-person, non-sentient beings and non-life span 。
修一切善法則得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。 須菩提 。所言善法者。
and practicing all good Dharmas, I attained supreme and perfect enlightenment 。 Subhūti 。That good Dharma 。
如來說非善法是名善法。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) says it is not a good Dharma. That why it is called a good Dharma 。
須 菩提 。
Subhūti 。
若 三千大千世界 中所有諸 須彌山 王。如是等 七寶 聚有人持用布施。
Suppose all great Mount Sumeru s in one billion worlds 。would be full of seven jewels and someone would use them for charity 。
若人以此 般若波羅蜜 經乃至四句偈等。
or if someone would use only four lines of verse from this Perfection of Wisdom Sutra 。
受持讀誦為他人說。於前福德百分不及一。
to accept, uphold, read, recite and explain them to others 。 then the blessings and virtues of the previous person would not be equal to one hundredth of the blessings and virtues of this person 。
百千萬億分乃至算數譬喻所不能及。
not one trillionth, not even comparable and calculable 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。汝等勿謂 如來 作是念。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。Do not say that Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) thinks 。
我當度眾生。 須菩提 。莫作是念。何以故。
I will liberate sentient beings 。 Subhūti 。Absolutely do not think so 。Why ? 。
實無有眾生 如來 度者。
There really do not exist sentient beings who have been liberated by Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。
若有眾生 如來 度者。如來則有我人眾生壽者 須菩提 。
If there are sentient beings who have been liberated by Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) still has signs of self, a person, sentient beings or a life span. Subhūti 。
如來說有我者則 非有 我。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has said having a self means not having a self 。
而凡夫之人以為有我。 須菩提 。凡夫者 如來 說則非凡夫。
but ordinary people say it is having a self 。 Subhūti 。Ordinary people that Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has spoken about are not ordinary people 。
須 菩提 。於意云何。
Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
可以三十二相觀 如來 不。 須菩提 言。如是如是。
Is it possible to use thirty-two marks to see Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ), no? 。 Subhūti replied 。So it is, So it is 。
以三十二相觀 如來 。佛言。 須菩提 。
It is possible to use thirty-two marks to see Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。Buddha said 。 Subhūti 。
若以三十二相觀 如來 者。 轉輪聖王 則是如來。
If thirty-two marks would be used to see Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。then a Wheel-Turning (Dharma) King would be a Buddha 。
須 菩提 白佛言。 世尊 。如我解佛所說義。
Subhūti said to Buddha 。World-honored One 。As I understand the Buddha teaching 。
不應以三十二相觀 如來 。爾時 世尊 而說偈言。
thirty-two marks should not be used to see Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。At that time, World-honored One spoke the following verse 。
若以色見我以音聲求我
If one uses forms to see me or sounds to find me
是人行邪道不能見 如來
that person is on wrong paths and unable to see Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata )
須 菩提 。汝若作是念。 如來 不以具足相故。
Subhūti 。If you think 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has, because of auspicious signs, 。
得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。 須菩提 。
attained supreme and perfect enlightenment 。 Subhūti 。
莫作是念。 如來 不以具足相故。
Absolutely do not think so 。Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) has not used auspicious signs 。
得阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 。 須菩提 。若作是念。
to attain supreme and perfect enlightenment 。 Subhūti 。If you think 。
發阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提 者說諸法斷滅相。
A person engendering the supreme and perfect enlightenment mind says that all dharmas have signs of destruction 。
莫作是念。何以故。發阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提心 者。
Absolutely do not think so 。Why ? 。Whoever engendering the supreme and perfect enlightenment mind 。
於法不說斷滅相。 須菩提 。
does not say the destruction signs of the Dharmas 。 Subhūti 。
若 菩薩 以滿恒河沙等世界 七寶 布施。
If a Bodhisattva would fill countless worlds with seven jewels for charity 。
若復有人知一切 法無我 得成於忍。
or if a Boddhisattva would understand the principle of non-self of all things and attain the tolerance wisdom 。
此 菩薩 勝前菩薩所得 功德 。 須菩提 。以諸菩薩不受福德故。
this Bodhisattva would have more merits and virtues than the previous one 。 Subhūti 。Because all Bodhisattvas do not accept blessings and virtues 。
須 菩提 白佛言。 世尊 。云何 菩薩 不受福德。
Subhūti said to Buddha 。World-honored One 。Why do Bodhisattvas not accept blessings and virtues ? 。
須 菩提 。 菩薩 所作福德不應貪著。
Subhūti 。 Bodhisattvas when performing blessings and virtues should not be subject to attachments 。
是故說不受福德。
For this reason, I say that they do not accept blessings and virtues 。
須 菩提 。
Subhūti 。
若有人言 如來 若來若去若坐若臥。是人不解我所說義。何以故。
If there is someone who says that Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) comes or goes or sits or lies down 。that person does not understand my teaching 。Why ? 。
如來者無所從來亦無所去故名如來。
Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) is neither coming from somewhere nor going anywhere. That why I am called Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) 。
須 菩提 。若 善男子 善女人。
Subhūti 。Suppose a good man or a good woman 。
以 三千大千世界 碎為微塵。於意云何。是微塵眾寧為多不。
were to grind one billion worlds to dust particles 。What do you think? 。These particles would be many, no? 。
甚多 世尊 。何以故。若是微塵眾實有者。
Very many, World-honored One 。Why ? 。If these particles really exist。
佛則不說是微塵眾。所以者何。
Buddha says that they are not dust particles 。Why so? 。
佛說微塵眾則非微塵眾。是名微塵眾。 世尊 。
Buddha has said that dust particles are not dust particles 。They are called dust particles 。World-honored One 。
如來所說 三千大千世界 則非世界。是名世界。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has said that one billion worlds are not one billion worlds 。They are called one billion worlds 。
何以故。若世界實有者則是一合相。
Why ? 。 If these worlds really existed, they would only be an unity of signs 。
如來說一合相則非一合相。是名一合相。 須菩提 。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) has said that an unity of signs is not an unity of signs 。That is why it is called an unity of signs 。 Subhūti 。
一合相者則是不可說。但凡夫之人貪著其事。
An unity of signs cannot be spoken 。Only ordinary people are attached to it 。
須 菩提 。
Subhūti 。
若人言佛說我見人見眾生見壽者見。 須菩提 。於意云何。
If someone says Buddha has spoken of a view of self, a view of a person, a view of sentient beings or a view of a life span 。 Subhūti 。What do you think? 。
是人解我所說義不。 世尊 。是人不解 如來 所說義。何以故。
Does that person understand my teaching, no? 。World-honored One 。That person does not understand the teaching of Thus-Come-One ( Tathagata ) 。why ? 。
世尊說我見人見眾生見壽者見即非我見
World-honored One has said that a view of a self, a view of a person, a view of sentient beings or a view of a life span are not a view of a self,
人見眾生見壽者見。
a view of a person, a view of sentient beings or a view of a life span 。
是名我見人見眾生見壽者見。 須菩提 。
These are called a view of a self, a view of a person, a view of sentient beings or a view of a life span 。 Subhūti 。
發阿耨多羅三藐三 菩提心 者。於 一切法 。
When engendering the supreme and perfect enlightenment mind 。 all dharmas 。
應如是知如是見如是信解不生 法相 。 須菩提 。所言法相者。
should thus be known, thus be viewed, thus be believed and thus be understood, and one should not give rise to the marks of the Dharma 。 Subhūti 。the marks of the Dharma that I have talked about。
如來說即非 法相 。是名法相。 須菩提 。
Thus-Come-One (Tathagata) says that they are not the Dharma marks 。They are called Dharma marks 。 Subhūti 。
若有人以滿無量 阿僧祇 世界 七寶 持用布施。
Suppose someone would fill infinite and incalculable worlds with seven jewels for charity 。
若有 善男子 善女人發 菩薩 心者。
and suppose there would be a good man or good woman engendering the Bodhisattva mind 。
持於此經乃至四句偈等。受持讀誦為人演說其福勝彼。
would just take four lines of verse in this Sutra 。would accept, uphold, read, recite and would explain them to others, then his blessings would be more than those of the previous one 。
云何為人演說。不取於相 如如 不動 。何以故。
How to explain to others ? 。By not attaching to signs, like the unaffected Thusness (innate nature) 。Why ? 。
一切有 為法如夢幻泡影
All conditioned dharmas (things) are like dreams, illusions, bubbles and shadows
如露亦如電應作如是觀
like dew and also like lightning. They should thus be contemplated.
佛說是經已。
When Buddha had expounded this Sutra 。
長老 須菩提 及諸 比丘 比丘尼 優婆塞 優婆夷 。一切 世間天 人阿修羅。
Venerable Subhūti with all Bhiksus (monk), Bhiksunis (nun), laymen, laywomen 。all Gods, humans and asuras (titans) in this world 。
聞佛所說皆大歡喜。
after listening to the Buddha were very elated 。
信受奉行金剛 般若波羅蜜 經。
All of them believed, accepted and faithfully practiced the Diamond Perfection of Wisdom Sutra 。
